Firewall Configuration in Rwanda (Security-Focused)
Firewall rules and policies built around your traffic, not a vendor default left running for years.
Security-focused firewall configuration hardens your firewall against real threats: intrusion prevention, threat filtering, tight rules, secure administration and useful logging. Any organisation whose firewall was set up once for connectivity and never revisited from a security angle needs it. This page covers the security side. The routing and connectivity side of the same device, getting traffic where it needs to go, is covered by router, switch and firewall configuration under IT Infrastructure.
What is security-focused firewall configuration, and who needs it
A firewall can pass legitimate traffic perfectly while doing very little to stop an attack. This service reviews and hardens it: enabling and tuning intrusion prevention and web filtering, reducing rules to what’s actually needed, securing remote access, locking down administration, keeping firmware current, and configuring logs that support detection and investigation. It suits organisations with an inherited or long-unreviewed firewall, regulated organisations, and anyone following up a cybersecurity assessment.
The problem it solves
The gap between “working” and “protecting” is common. Intrusion prevention licensed but switched off. Rules allowing far more than needed, often “any to any” exceptions added to fix a problem years ago. Remote access exposed to the internet with weak authentication. Firmware with known vulnerabilities. Logs too thin or too short-lived to answer basic questions after an incident. This service closes those gaps against your real risk.
What we harden
Inbound exposure. Every service reachable from the internet is justified or closed. Remote access goes through a VPN with individual accounts and multi-factor authentication, never through exposed remote-desktop ports.
Outbound control. Outbound traffic is restricted to what’s needed, and known-malicious destinations are blocked, which stops many infections from contacting their controllers.
Threat inspection. Intrusion prevention, malware filtering and web filtering are enabled, with active subscriptions, and tuned so they block real threats without breaking legitimate work.
Administration. The management interface is reachable only from a protected network, with individual administrator accounts, multi-factor authentication where supported, and default accounts removed.
Firmware. Current firmware closes known vulnerabilities, which attackers actively target in firewalls and VPN appliances.
Logging. Events are logged with enough detail, sent to a separate location, and kept for an agreed period, with accurate time settings.
Rule hygiene. Every rule gets an owner, a reason and a review date. Rules nobody can explain are disabled first and removed later, so anything that turns out to be needed can be restored quickly rather than rebuilt from memory.
What the work involves
- Review. We export the configuration, active features, subscriptions and recent logs.
- Risk check. Each rule and setting is judged against your risks, informed by an assessment where one exists.
- Plan changes, ranked by risk, each with a rollback step.
- Apply in an agreed maintenance window.
- Tune intrusion prevention and filtering over the following days, reducing false positives.
- Document the final rule set and the reason for each rule.
What’s included and what’s not
Included: security-focused rule review and hardening, intrusion prevention and threat filtering configuration, secure remote access, and logging setup.
Not included unless bundled: the underlying connectivity configuration if not already in place (see IT Infrastructure & Networking’s router/switch/firewall configuration) and ongoing monitoring of the logs generated (see security monitoring).
Typical timelines and what drives cost
A single-site firewall review and hardening typically takes one to two days, followed by a short tuning period. Cost is driven by rule set size and complexity, the number of sites and firewalls, remote access needs, whether security subscriptions need renewing, and how much remediation the review uncovers.
Equipment typically used
Business firewalls and unified threat management appliances from established manufacturers, with their intrusion prevention, web filtering and malware subscriptions active. VPN with multi-factor authentication for remote access. A separate log destination, such as a log server or cloud logging service, so records survive if the firewall is compromised. Where your firewall is no longer receiving firmware updates from its manufacturer, we’ll recommend replacing it, since no configuration can fix vulnerabilities that will never be patched.
Common mistakes we see
Intrusion prevention present but disabled, or its subscription lapsed so its signatures are years out of date. Remote desktop exposed directly to the internet. Firmware never updated. “Temporary” broad rules that became permanent. Logs kept only on the firewall itself, where an attacker can erase them. And nobody reviewing the logs at all, which is where security monitoring comes in.

How Much Does Firewall Security Configuration Cost in Rwanda?
Firewall security configuration cost depends on threat filtering complexity, logging depth, and intrusion prevention needs — here's the breakdown.
Frequently asked questions
How is this different from the firewall configuration under IT Infrastructure & Networking?
The infrastructure service configures a firewall for routing and connectivity, getting traffic where it needs to go. This service reviews and hardens that same firewall from a security angle: intrusion prevention, threat filtering, tighter rules, secure administration and logging good enough to investigate an incident. It often follows a cybersecurity assessment, once the risks the firewall must address are known.
What is intrusion prevention, and does our firewall already have it?
Intrusion prevention inspects the content of traffic for known attack patterns and blocks them, rather than only checking where traffic comes from and goes to. Many business firewalls include it but ship with it switched off, unlicensed or untuned. We check whether yours has it, whether the subscription that keeps its signatures current is active, and enable and tune it.
Do you configure geo-blocking or similar traffic restrictions?
Where it makes sense. Blocking inbound connections from countries you have no business with reduces the volume of automated attacks reaching exposed services, such as remote access. It's never a complete defence, since attackers use servers worldwide, so we base it on your actual traffic and pair it with stronger controls, rather than treating it as protection on its own.
Can firewall logs be used for compliance or audit purposes?
Yes, if logging is configured for it. That means recording the right events in enough detail, keeping them long enough, storing them somewhere they can't be altered by an attacker who reaches the firewall, and keeping the device clock accurate. Those are deliberate configuration choices, not defaults, and they also decide whether an incident can be investigated at all.
Does a firewall security review require downtime?
The review itself doesn't: it's done by reading the configuration and logs. Applying changes, such as enabling intrusion prevention, tightening rules or updating firmware, is scheduled in an agreed maintenance window, usually outside working hours. Each change is backed up first with a rollback step, so if something legitimate is blocked unexpectedly, it can be restored in minutes.
