Website Performance Optimization
Load-time and Core Web Vitals fixes for a site that’s slow enough to lose visitors.
A website that launches and is never touched again slowly degrades. Plugins go unpatched, content goes stale, the SSL certificate lapses and search rankings slip. Web design in Rwanda from GENIUS covers the build and everything that keeps a site working afterwards: hosting, domains, business email, security and maintenance. Our starting principle is ownership. Your organisation holds every account, every password and every file, so the site never depends on one developer’s goodwill.
What this covers
Building the site. Website development covers custom builds; WordPress development covers sites staff can edit themselves; corporate websites are structured around what clients, partners and funders need to find.
The infrastructure underneath. Domain registration registers and renews your domain under your own account. Web hosting is sized to real traffic, with backups and uptime monitoring. Business email setup gives staff professional addresses on your domain; for email as part of Microsoft 365, see Microsoft & Cloud.
Keeping it healthy. SSL and website security covers certificates and hardening. Website maintenance covers updates, backups and content changes. Website performance optimisation fixes sites slow enough to lose visitors.
The ownership problem, and how we avoid it
The single most common issue we’re asked to fix isn’t design. It’s that nobody on staff can log into the domain registrar, the hosting account or the website’s admin panel. It usually happens when a freelancer or agency registered everything under their own name and is no longer reachable. Renewal then fails, the site goes offline and email stops working.
We avoid it with a few simple rules:
- Domains are registered in your organisation’s name. Rwanda’s
.rwdomains, including.co.rwand.org.rw, are managed by RICTA and registered through accredited registrars. International domains such as.comgo through registrars of their own. Either way, the registrant is your organisation. - Hosting and email accounts belong to you, with billing in your name or clearly invoiced through us.
- Credentials are handed to a named person on your team at launch, and we document what each account controls.
- The site’s files and database are backed up somewhere you can reach without us.
If you’re dealing with a site whose access has been lost, we can usually help recover it, though it sometimes takes evidence of ownership and patience with the registrar.
Built for how Rwandan visitors actually browse
Most visitors arrive on a phone, often on mobile data, and sometimes on a slow connection. That shapes the build:
- Mobile-first design, tested on real phone sizes rather than shrunk from a desktop layout.
- Lightweight pages: compressed images, minimal scripts and no heavy page-builder bloat. Faster pages also rank better.
- Clear contact routes, such as phone, WhatsApp where you use it, and simple forms, because many visitors want to talk rather than read.
- Multiple languages where needed, planned into the structure from the start, since adding Kinyarwanda or French to an English-only site later is far more work.
What drives cost
We quote websites at a fixed price once the scope is clear. The main drivers are:
- Number of page templates, rather than total pages: twenty pages sharing three layouts cost less than ten unique designs.
- Functionality such as booking, online payments, member areas, search or integrations.
- Languages. Each extra language adds translation management and testing.
- Content. Writing, photography and editing, if you need us to provide them.
- Hosting level, from shared hosting for brochure sites to dedicated resources for busy or business-critical ones.
- Maintenance plan, chosen separately after launch.
Mistakes we see after launch
No maintenance at all. Plugins and themes go out of date, and the site is compromised within months.
Domain renewal tied to a personal card or email. When the card expires or the person leaves, the site goes offline.
Nobody trained to update content. The site freezes at launch and becomes less accurate every month.
Heavy images straight from a camera, which make pages slow on mobile data and push visitors away.
How the engagement works
Assess. We review your current site, if any: what it needs to achieve, who will update it, and where your domain and hosting accounts currently sit.
Design. We produce a sitemap, then wireframes for anything beyond a handful of pages, agreed before building starts.
Deploy. Development, content entry, hosting setup and domain configuration, then testing across devices and browsers before launch.
Secure. HTTPS, security headers, limited admin accounts, automatic backups and update policies go in as standard.
Support. Maintenance and monitoring keep the site from quietly degrading after handover, with content changes handled on request.
Who it’s for
SMEs establishing a credible web presence for the first time.
Hotels needing fast, image-led sites that make booking or enquiring easy.
NGOs needing sites that serve funders, partners and beneficiaries, often in more than one language.
Government agencies and schools needing accessible, maintainable sites with clear information structure.
Any organisation whose current site was built by someone no longer reachable.
What we’ll need from you
- Any existing domain, hosting or website login details, or confirmation that none exist yet.
- Your logo and brand assets.
- A list of the pages and features you need, even a rough one.
- Sites you like and dislike, and why.
- A named person who will approve content and sign off launch.
If your content isn’t ready, that’s normal. We’ll tell you exactly what’s needed, in what format, and by when, so it doesn’t hold up the launch.

Frequently asked questions
Should our website be built on WordPress or custom code?
WordPress suits most corporate and small-business sites: staff can edit content without a developer, and its ecosystem is mature. Custom-built sites make sense when you need functionality WordPress handles badly, or performance a plugin-heavy WordPress site would struggle to reach. We recommend based on what the site must do and who will maintain it, not on our own preference.
Who owns the domain name and hosting account after the project ends?
You do. We register domains and set up hosting under accounts your organisation controls, with credentials handed to a named person on your team. A developer holding a client's domain in their personal account is one of the most common problems we're asked to untangle, often years later when renewal fails and the site disappears.
Does the website come with ongoing maintenance, or is that separate?
Launch and ongoing maintenance are quoted separately, because organisations need different levels of support. We strongly recommend at least basic maintenance, meaning security updates, backups and uptime monitoring. An unmaintained WordPress site with outdated plugins is one of the easiest targets on the internet, and cleaning up a hacked site costs far more than maintaining it.
How much does a business website cost?
It depends on page count, features such as booking, payments or multiple languages, design complexity, and how ready your content is. We quote a fixed price after understanding the scope rather than publishing a generic number. Content that isn't ready is the most common reason projects overrun, so we plan content early.
Can you set up business email on our own domain?
Yes, either through Microsoft 365 or through a hosting provider's email service. Microsoft 365 suits organisations that also need shared calendars, file storage and Teams; hosting-provider email is cheaper for organisations that only need mailboxes. Either way we configure the authentication records that stop your messages landing in spam and make your domain harder to spoof.
Will our website work well on mobile and load quickly?
Yes, because both are build requirements rather than extras. Most visitors arrive on phones, often on mobile data, so pages are designed mobile-first, images are compressed and resized, and load speed is tested on a throttled connection before launch. For existing sites that are slow, performance optimisation is available as a separate service.
Can anyone on your team still log in to your website?
Tell us what you have today, including domain and hosting. We’ll recover access or quote a rebuild.
