Web Hosting in Rwanda
Hosting sized to real traffic, with backups and uptime monitoring included.
Web hosting runs your website on reliable servers sized to its traffic, with backups, monitoring, HTTPS and server updates handled, so the site stays available and recoverable. Any organisation with a website on bare-minimum hosting, no backups or no idea who to call when it goes down needs it. This page covers hosting websites. Running wider cloud infrastructure, such as servers and databases in Azure, is covered by cloud infrastructure management.
What is web hosting, and who needs it
It’s the provision and management of the server environment your website runs on: shared, managed WordPress, virtual private or cloud hosting, plus the backups, security, monitoring and support that come with it. It suits any organisation with a website, and especially those whose site takes enquiries, applications or payments, where downtime has a direct cost.
The problem it solves
The cheapest hosting usually costs more in the end. Servers are overloaded, so sites slow at busy times. Backups are missing or stored on the same server. Support is slow and generic. Nobody notices when the site goes down. And when a site is hacked, there’s no clean copy to restore. Managed hosting sized to the site closes those gaps.
Choosing the right kind of hosting
Shared hosting. Many sites share one server. Fine for small, low-traffic brochure sites when the provider is reputable.
Managed WordPress hosting. Tuned for WordPress, with caching, updates and backups built in. A good default for most organisational sites.
Virtual private server or cloud hosting. Dedicated resources for busy sites, web applications, online payments or sites with traffic peaks.
Static hosting. For sites built as static files: extremely fast, very secure and cheap to run, though less convenient for frequent editing.
Whichever type you choose, what matters most is the provider’s reliability, how quickly real people answer when something breaks, and whether backups and monitoring are actually included rather than sold as extras.
What well-managed hosting includes
- Daily backups, kept off the server, with restores tested.
- HTTPS with automatically renewing certificates, as covered under SSL and website security.
- Uptime and certificate monitoring with alerts.
- Server updates and secure configuration, with unnecessary services off.
- A firewall in front of the site to filter common attacks.
- Caching and compression for speed.
- Separate staging for testing changes before they go live.
- Your own account and access, so the hosting doesn’t depend on us.
Where the site is hosted
Hosting location affects speed and, if the site holds personal data, legal obligations. Rwanda’s data protection law requires personal data to be stored in Rwanda unless the National Cyber Security Authority’s registration certificate permits otherwise. A brochure site’s pages aren’t personal data, but application forms, member databases and enquiry records can be. We help you document what the site stores and where, so you and your adviser can decide.
What the work involves
- Assess the site’s traffic, functions and data.
- Recommend the hosting type and provider.
- Set up hosting in an account you own, with HTTPS, backups and monitoring.
- Migrate the site and test before switching DNS.
- Switch over outside busy hours, then monitor.
- Manage updates, backups and alerts on an ongoing basis.
What’s included and what’s not
Included: hosting setup, backups, uptime monitoring, HTTPS, and server updates.
Not included unless bundled: website software updates such as WordPress and plugins (see website maintenance), email hosting (see business email setup), and the hosting provider’s own fees.
Typical timelines and what drives cost
New hosting can be set up within a day; a migration typically takes one to three days including testing. Cost is driven by the hosting type and resources, traffic, storage, backup retention, monitoring level and whether a staging site is needed.
Equipment typically used
Reputable hosting providers with data centres suited to your visitors and data, a control panel or server management tools, automatic certificate management, off-server backup storage, external uptime monitoring and a web application firewall.
Common mistakes we see
Choosing hosting on price alone. Backups only on the same server as the site. Hosting accounts in a developer’s name. No monitoring, so outages go unnoticed for days. Moving hosting and forgetting the email that lived there. And no staging site, so updates are tested on the live site.

How Much Does Web Hosting Cost in Rwanda?
Web hosting cost depends on traffic and resource needs, hosting type, and what's bundled beyond bare server space — here's what drives the number.
Frequently asked questions
What hosting plan does our website actually need?
It depends on traffic, what the site does and how much downtime you can accept. A brochure site with modest traffic runs well on good shared or managed WordPress hosting. Sites with online payments, member areas, large media or traffic peaks need dedicated resources such as a virtual server. We size from your current traffic and growth, not the cheapest plan.
Are backups included with hosting, or a separate service?
Included, on hosting we manage. Files and databases are backed up daily and kept for at least a month, with a copy stored away from the hosting server itself, so a server failure or hacked account doesn't take the backups with it. We test restores, because a backup that has never been restored is an assumption, not a safeguard.
How do we know if our site is down?
Uptime monitoring checks the site every few minutes from outside and alerts us, and you if you wish, the moment it stops responding. It also warns before HTTPS certificates or the domain expire. Many organisations otherwise learn their site is down from a customer days later, which is both embarrassing and avoidable.
Can hosting be moved from our current provider without the site going down?
Yes, usually with no visible downtime. We copy the site to the new host, test it there privately, lower the DNS record lifetimes in advance, then switch the domain over outside busy hours. Email is planned separately if it's hosted with the same provider, so mail isn't lost in the move. The old hosting is kept until everything is confirmed.
Should our website be hosted in Rwanda or abroad?
It depends on who visits and what data the site holds. A server closer to visitors can respond faster, while international providers often offer more resilience and features. If the site stores personal data, such as applications or member records, where it's stored matters under Rwanda's data protection law. We explain the trade-off and document the choice.
