Hardware & Software Troubleshooting in Rwanda

Fixes for problems a restart doesn't solve.

Hardware and software troubleshooting finds and fixes the real cause of problems that keep coming back: crashes, freezes, slowness, connection drops, application errors and faults a restart only hides for a while. Any organisation with recurring IT problems that have been “fixed” several times already needs it. This page covers persistent faults in devices and software. Physical repair of a confirmed hardware fault is covered by computer and laptop repair.

What is hardware and software troubleshooting, and who needs it

It’s structured diagnosis for faults that resist quick fixes. Instead of trying remedies at random, we gather evidence, form a theory, test it, and change one thing at a time until the cause is proven. It covers computers, peripherals, operating systems, applications, accounts and the network connections they depend on. It suits organisations where staff have learned to live with a problem, or where several people have tried and failed to fix one.

The problem it solves

Repeated workarounds cost more than one proper fix. Every restart, reinstall or “try again” takes a few minutes of someone’s time, and the fault returns. Worse, guessing can introduce new problems, and a fault declared fixed because it stopped for a day erodes trust in IT support. Evidence-based troubleshooting fixes the cause once, records it, and stops the cycle.

How we work through a fault

Describe the symptom precisely. What happens, to whom, on which device, when it started, and what changed around then.

Find the pattern. Is it one user or many, one device model or several, one location, one time of day, one application?

Collect evidence. Event logs, crash reports, hardware diagnostics, network tests and application logs.

Test one change at a time, so the cause is known when the fault stops.

Fix the cause, whether a driver, update, setting, failing component, conflicting software or network issue.

Verify under real conditions, then record the cause and fix so it’s recognised instantly if it recurs.

The causes we find most often

  • Drivers and updates: a recent update or outdated driver conflicting with hardware.
  • Failing hardware: drives with rising errors, overheating from blocked fans, failing memory or worn batteries.
  • Too little capacity: full disks, too little memory for current applications, or devices too old for the software they run.
  • Conflicting software: two security products, leftover programs or startup clutter.
  • Network and Wi-Fi: weak coverage, address conflicts or DNS problems presenting as “the application is slow”.
  • Accounts and permissions: expired passwords, broken profiles or missing access after a change.

Often several symptoms share one cause. Slow logins, dropped Teams calls and files that won’t open from the shared drive can all trace back to one overloaded network link or one misconfigured setting, which is why we look for the pattern before fixing anything.

What the work involves

  1. Take the fault from the helpdesk with its history.
  2. Investigate remotely first, on site where needed.
  3. Agree the fix with you if it needs downtime, a purchase or a change for others.
  4. Apply and verify the fix.
  5. Document the cause, and check whether other devices share it.

What’s included and what’s not

Included: structured diagnosis, configuration and software fixes, verification, and a written record of the cause.

Not included unless separately scoped: replacement parts and physical repair (see computer and laptop repair), rebuilding devices to a new standard (see system configuration) and changes to specialist software, which stay with its vendor.

Typical timelines and what drives cost

Most faults are resolved within one remote or on-site session. Intermittent problems can take longer, because evidence has to be collected while the fault occurs, sometimes over several days. Cost depends on complexity, whether a site visit is needed, and whether several devices or users are affected.

Equipment typically used

Secure remote support tools, operating system event logs and reliability history, hardware diagnostic utilities, drive health tools, network testers and Wi-Fi survey tools, and the ticket history that shows whether a fault has happened before.

Common mistakes we see

The same workaround applied every week. Several changes made at once, so nobody knows which one worked. A fault declared fixed because it stopped for a day. Connected symptoms treated as separate problems. No record of the cause, so the next person starts again. And a slow, ageing device repaired repeatedly instead of replaced.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of problems fall under this service versus general helpdesk support?

Faults that come back. The helpdesk resolves everyday issues quickly, often in one contact. When a problem keeps returning after the usual fixes, affects several people in the same way, or has no obvious cause, it moves to structured troubleshooting: gathering evidence, testing one possibility at a time and fixing the underlying cause rather than the symptom.

Can you troubleshoot software that isn't something you originally installed?

Yes. Most of what we troubleshoot was set up by someone else. We start by recording how the device or system is actually configured, which is often different from what anyone remembers, then work from evidence. For specialist business software, we gather logs and reproduce the fault so the vendor can fix it quickly if the cause is theirs.

How do you know when a problem is actually resolved, versus just not currently showing symptoms?

By knowing the cause, not just seeing the symptom disappear. We confirm the fix explains every symptom, then test under the conditions where it occurred, such as the same time of day, the same network or the same workload. Intermittent faults are monitored for an agreed period before the ticket is closed.

Is remote troubleshooting as effective as an on-site visit?

For software, configuration, account and many network problems, yes, and it's faster. Logs, settings and tests are all available remotely with the user's permission. Faults involving hardware, cabling, power, physical damage or the environment around a device, such as Wi-Fi in a particular room, need someone on site.

Why does restarting a computer fix so many problems?

A restart clears memory, closes stuck processes, reconnects to the network and finishes installing pending updates, so many temporary glitches disappear. That's why it's the right first step. But if the same problem returns regularly, something is causing it, such as a faulty driver, a failing drive or a conflicting application, and that cause needs finding.
