Computer & Laptop Repair in Rwanda
Diagnosis and repair for desktops and laptops, in office or at your site.
Computer and laptop repair diagnoses faults in desktops and laptops properly before any part is changed, fixes what’s worth fixing, says honestly when replacement is better value, and protects the data on the device throughout. Any organisation with devices that won’t start, run badly, have physical damage or keep failing needs it. This page covers physical repair. Persistent software and configuration faults that a restart doesn’t solve are covered by hardware and software troubleshooting.
What is computer and laptop repair, and who needs it
It’s diagnosis and repair of hardware faults, such as failed drives, memory, screens, keyboards, batteries, chargers, fans and motherboards, plus the software reinstallation that sometimes follows. It covers business desktops and laptops from the common manufacturers. It suits any organisation whose staff depend on their computers, and especially those with ageing fleets or devices used in dusty or demanding conditions.
The problem it solves
Repairs based on guesses cost twice. A part is replaced, the fault returns, and a second part follows. Meanwhile the user waits, data on the device is at risk, and sometimes the device was never worth repairing. Diagnosis first, an honest repair-or-replace recommendation and a loan device where needed keep both the cost and the disruption down.
Repair or replace: how we decide
- Age and condition: a device near the end of its useful life rarely justifies an expensive repair.
- Repair cost against replacement cost, including our time.
- Operating system support: Windows 11 needs a supported 64-bit processor, 4 GB of memory, 64 GB of storage and TPM 2.0, so older PCs that can’t meet that face a security problem regardless of the fault.
- Parts availability: parts for older or less common models can take weeks to arrive.
- Warranty: devices still under warranty go to the manufacturer.
We give you the numbers and a recommendation, and the decision is yours.
Protecting data during repair
Before work starts, we confirm where the user’s files are. If anything important exists only on the device, we back it up first where the device allows. Devices leaving your premises are recorded with their condition, and anyone handling them is accountable. When a drive is replaced or a device retired, the old drive is wiped using a method suited to it or destroyed. Overwriting isn’t enough for solid-state drives, which need the manufacturer’s secure erase or a cryptographic erase. Retired equipment then goes to a licensed e-waste recycler. In Rwanda, e-waste handling is governed by a 2018 regulation, and a dedicated dismantling and recycling facility was established in Bugesera.
What the work involves
- Record the fault, the device and where its data lives.
- Diagnose with hardware tests before replacing anything.
- Advise: repair cost, replacement cost and a recommendation.
- Repair on site or at the workshop, with a loan device if needed.
- Test under normal use, and restore data and settings.
- Dispose of replaced parts and drives securely.
What’s included and what’s not
Included: diagnosis, labour for repair, data backup before work where possible, testing, and secure disposal of replaced drives.
Not included unless arranged: parts (quoted after diagnosis), repairs under manufacturer warranty, specialist laboratory data recovery, and replacement devices (see laptops under IT Equipment Supply).
Typical timelines and what drives cost
Diagnosis usually takes under an hour. Simple on-site repairs take an hour or two; workshop repairs take one to five days, mostly depending on parts. Cost is driven by the fault, the price and availability of parts, whether a site visit is needed, and whether data needs to be recovered first.
Equipment typically used
Hardware diagnostic tools, manufacturer service utilities, anti-static work equipment, drive cloning and backup tools, secure wiping tools for hard drives and solid-state drives, and a small stock of common parts such as memory, drives and chargers.
Common mistakes we see
Parts replaced on a guess. Old laptops repaired repeatedly at more than they’re worth. Devices under warranty opened and the warranty voided. Important files kept only on a laptop until it fails. Old drives reformatted and sold or given away with data still recoverable. And e-waste dumped rather than recycled.

How Much Does Computer & Laptop Repair Cost in Rwanda?
Computer and laptop repair cost depends on proper diagnosis, parts availability, and whether repair still makes sense versus replacement.
Frequently asked questions
Can repairs happen on-site, or does the device need to be collected?
Many repairs happen on site: replacing memory, a drive, a keyboard or a charger, and fixing software. Board-level faults, screen replacements on some models and anything needing specialist tools are done at a workshop. We tell you which applies before collecting anything, record the device's condition, and arrange a loan machine if the repair will take more than a day.
Do you repair devices under manufacturer warranty?
We usually route them to the manufacturer or its authorised service partner, because opening a device under warranty can void that warranty. We can handle the logistics, diagnose the fault first so the claim is accurate, back up the data before it leaves, and set up a loan device while it's away.
How do you decide whether to repair a device or recommend replacement?
By comparing the repair cost with the device's remaining useful life. A five-year-old laptop needing a new motherboard is rarely worth fixing. One that can't run a supported operating system, such as a PC that doesn't meet Windows 11's requirements, is a poor candidate whatever the fault. We give you both costs and a recommendation, and the decision is yours.
Can you recover data from a device that won't start?
Often, yes. If the drive itself is healthy, data can usually be copied off by removing it or starting the device from recovery tools. If the drive has failed physically, recovery needs a specialist laboratory and isn't guaranteed. This is why we'd much rather your files live in OneDrive or on a server than only on a laptop.
What happens to the data on a device you replace or dispose of?
It's removed properly before the device leaves your control. Simply deleting files or reformatting doesn't remove data; drives should be wiped with methods matched to the drive type, following the NIST media sanitisation guidelines, or physically destroyed. We record which devices were wiped and how, and pass old equipment to licensed e-waste recyclers.
