Microsoft Entra ID Configuration in Rwanda

Identity, conditional access and single sign-on configured through Microsoft Entra ID.

Microsoft Entra ID configuration sets up the identity system behind Microsoft 365 so sign-ins are protected: multi-factor authentication enforced, conditional access rules based on device and risk, single sign-on to other applications, and administrator roles locked down. Any organisation on Microsoft 365 with optional multi-factor authentication, shared admin accounts or separate logins for every system needs it. This page covers the Microsoft configuration. The wider policies and processes for managing access across any platform are covered by identity and access management under Cybersecurity.

What is Microsoft Entra ID configuration, and who needs it

It’s the design and rollout of identity controls in your tenant: who can sign in, how, from which devices and locations, to which applications, and with what administrative rights. It suits organisations on Microsoft 365 Business Premium or enterprise plans that already own conditional access but haven’t used it, and any organisation where one phished password could open email, files and finance systems.

The problem it solves

Most account compromises start with a stolen or guessed password. Without enforced multi-factor authentication, that password alone is enough. Without conditional access, a sign-in from an unknown laptop in another country looks the same as one from the office. Without single sign-on, every application has its own password, and leavers keep access to the ones nobody remembered. Entra ID, configured properly, closes all three gaps from one place.

Which Entra ID level gives you what

Free, with every Microsoft 365 subscription. User accounts, groups and security defaults: required multi-factor authentication registration, extra protection for administrators and blocking of legacy sign-in protocols.

Entra ID P1, included in Microsoft 365 Business Premium and enterprise plans. Conditional access based on user, group, device, location and application, plus single sign-on to third-party cloud applications.

Entra ID P2, included in higher enterprise plans or bought as an add-on. Risk-based policies, which react to signs such as leaked credentials or unusual sign-in patterns, and Privileged Identity Management, which grants administrator rights only for a limited time when needed.

We check what you hold before designing anything, and recommend P2 only where its features justify the cost.

A typical baseline

  • Multi-factor authentication for everyone, rolled out in stages with support.
  • Block legacy authentication, which can’t do multi-factor authentication.
  • Require a managed, compliant device for sensitive applications, working with Microsoft Intune.
  • Block or challenge sign-ins from countries where you have no staff.
  • Separate, protected administrator accounts, with as few global administrators as possible. Microsoft now enforces multi-factor authentication for the Azure, Entra and Intune admin centres in any case.
  • Emergency access accounts, excluded from policies and stored securely, so a misconfiguration can’t lock everyone out.

What the work involves

  1. Review current accounts, admin roles, sign-in methods and licences.
  2. Design the policies, with a report-only phase to see who they would affect.
  3. Roll out multi-factor authentication in groups, helping staff register.
  4. Switch policies on, starting with administrators.
  5. Connect applications for single sign-on where they support it.
  6. Document every policy and the emergency access procedure.

What’s included and what’s not

Included: multi-factor authentication rollout, conditional access design, single sign-on for supported applications, and administrator role clean-up.

Not included unless bundled: device enrolment (see Microsoft Intune), the tenant setup itself (see Microsoft 365 deployment) and access policies beyond Microsoft systems (see identity and access management).

Typical timelines and what drives cost

Configuring an existing tenant typically takes two to four days, plus one to two weeks for staged multi-factor authentication rollout. Cost is driven by user count, the number of conditional access scenarios, applications to connect for single sign-on, and how much clean-up existing accounts and admin roles need.

Equipment typically used

The Microsoft Entra admin centre, the Microsoft Authenticator app on staff phones, and hardware security keys for administrators or staff without smartphones. Intune for device compliance signals used by conditional access.

Common mistakes we see

Multi-factor authentication left optional. Everyday accounts with global administrator rights. Conditional access policies switched straight on without a report-only test, locking out staff. No emergency access account. Legacy authentication still allowed for one old application. And former staff accounts disabled in Microsoft 365 but still working in a separately managed system.

Frequently asked questions

Do we already have Entra ID if we use Microsoft 365?

Yes. Entra ID, formerly Azure Active Directory, is the identity system behind every Microsoft 365 account. The free level includes security defaults, a basic set of protections. Entra ID P1, included in Business Premium and enterprise plans, adds conditional access; P2 adds risk-based policies and time-limited administrator access. What matters is which level you hold and what's switched on.

What is conditional access, in practical terms?

A set of rules that decide how someone may sign in based on context: who they are, which device, where from and which application. For example, require multi-factor authentication for everyone, allow finance data only from managed laptops, and block sign-ins from countries where you have no staff. Normal sign-ins stay easy; risky ones get stopped or challenged.

Can Entra ID provide single sign-on for systems beyond Microsoft 365?

Yes, for applications that support modern sign-in standards such as SAML or OpenID Connect, which most cloud business applications do. Staff then use one account, protected by the same multi-factor authentication and conditional access, and disabling that account cuts off every connected application at once, which makes offboarding far more reliable.

Is multi-factor authentication difficult for staff to use day to day?

No. With an authenticator app, staff approve a prompt on their phone, and on a trusted, managed device the prompt appears only occasionally. The main effort is the first setup, which we support in person or by short sessions. Staff without a smartphone can use a hardware security key instead.

What are security defaults, and are they enough?

Security defaults are Microsoft's free baseline: they require multi-factor authentication registration, protect administrators and block old sign-in protocols. For a very small organisation without Entra ID P1, they're a good start. With P1, conditional access gives finer control, such as device requirements and location rules, and replaces security defaults once your policies are in place.
