Microsoft Intune Device Management in Rwanda

Device enrolment and policy management across company and BYOD devices through Intune.

Microsoft Intune device management enrols company laptops and protects work data on personal phones, so every device that touches company email and files follows the same rules: encrypted, updated, protected and wipeable if lost. Any organisation with staff working on laptops and phones that nobody centrally manages needs it. This page covers designing and rolling out Intune. The ongoing work of running it, such as onboarding, patch follow-up and leavers, is covered by user and device management.

What is Microsoft Intune device management, and who needs it

It’s the configuration of Intune policies for each kind of device, and the enrolment of your fleet. Company laptops are fully managed; personal phones get app-level protection only. Intune also feeds device compliance into Entra ID conditional access, so only healthy devices reach sensitive data. It suits organisations on Business Premium or enterprise plans that already own Intune, and any organisation where staff work away from the office.

The problem it solves

An unmanaged laptop depends on its user remembering to update, encrypt and lock it. When it’s left in a taxi, nobody knows whether the data on it was protected. Personal phones with company email have the same problem, multiplied. Intune makes protection a policy rather than a habit, gives you a list of every device with its status, and lets you remove company data from a lost device or a departing employee’s phone.

Company devices and personal devices

Company-owned laptops and desktops are enrolled fully. Intune enforces encryption with recovery keys stored centrally, screen lock, firewall, update schedules, Defender settings and approved applications, and can lock, wipe or reset a device remotely.

Company-owned phones are enrolled as work devices, with work and personal profiles separated where the platform supports it.

Personal phones and tablets aren’t enrolled. App protection policies protect work data inside Outlook, Teams, OneDrive and other managed apps: a PIN for the apps, no copying into personal apps, and selective wipe of work data only.

Personal laptops are best limited to browser access to email and files, controlled through conditional access, rather than synced company data.

Windows updates and older devices

Windows 10 reached end of support on 14 October 2025. Devices still running it no longer receive regular security updates unless covered by Microsoft’s paid Extended Security Updates, and enrolling them in Intune doesn’t change that. Part of an Intune rollout is identifying those devices and planning their upgrade to Windows 11 or their replacement. For new laptops, Windows Autopilot lets devices configure themselves from first sign-in.

What the work involves

  1. Inventory devices and check licences per user.
  2. Design policies for company laptops, company phones and personal devices.
  3. Set up compliance rules, update rings, applications and app protection.
  4. Pilot with a small group, then adjust.
  5. Enrol the fleet, remotely where possible.
  6. Connect compliance to conditional access, and hand over a lost-device procedure.

What’s included and what’s not

Included: policy design for each device type, enrolment setup, application deployment, and compliance configuration.

Not included unless bundled: day-to-day administration after rollout (see user and device management), identity and conditional access design (see Microsoft Entra ID) and endpoint threat protection tuning (see Microsoft Defender under Cybersecurity).

Typical timelines and what drives cost

Policy design and a pilot typically take three to five days, with fleet enrolment over the following one to two weeks. Cost is driven by device count and types, how many different policies are needed, applications to package and deploy, the number of older devices needing attention, and whether devices are in one office or spread across sites and homes.

Equipment typically used

The Intune admin centre, Windows Autopilot for new laptops, Apple Business Manager for company iPhones and Macs, and Android Enterprise for company Android phones. The Company Portal and Microsoft apps on staff devices.

Common mistakes we see

The same policy pushed to company and personal devices, so staff refuse to enrol their phones. Intune licensed but devices never enrolled. Encryption enforced without recovery keys stored centrally. Policies switched on for everyone at once with no pilot. Windows 10 devices left running with no update plan. And no procedure for a lost device, so nobody wipes it.

Frequently asked questions

Can Intune manage personal phones without controlling the whole device?

Yes. App protection policies secure only the work apps, such as Outlook, Teams and OneDrive, without enrolling the whole phone. They can require a PIN for those apps, block copying work data into personal apps and remove work data remotely. Photos, messages and personal apps stay out of the organisation's view, which staff are far more willing to accept.

What does Intune actually enforce on company-owned devices?

A full baseline: disk encryption with recovery keys stored centrally, screen lock, firewall, Windows or macOS updates on a schedule, approved applications installed automatically, and Defender settings. Devices that fall out of line are marked non-compliant, and conditional access can block them from company data until they're fixed. Lost or stolen devices can be locked or wiped remotely.

Do we need a specific Microsoft 365 licence tier for Intune?

Yes. Intune Plan 1 is included in Microsoft 365 Business Premium and in enterprise plans such as E3 and E5, but not in Business Basic or Business Standard. It can also be bought separately. We check what each user holds, because a mixed tenant where only some staff have Intune needs policies designed around that.

How long does it take to enrol an existing device fleet?

For a few dozen devices, typically one to two weeks after the policies are tested. Existing company laptops can often be enrolled remotely, with a short visit only for problem devices. Personal phones are protected as staff next sign in to work apps. A pilot group of five to ten devices always goes first, so problems don't reach everyone.

What is Windows Autopilot, and should we use it?

Autopilot lets a new company laptop configure itself: staff unbox it, sign in with their work account and Intune installs the settings and applications automatically. It saves hours per device and gives every laptop the same setup. It's well worth it for organisations buying several laptops a year, provided devices are registered for Autopilot when purchased.
